Erykah Badu | The Guardian New Amerykah Part Two (Return of the Ankh)
There is perhaps one story that explains Erykah Badu’s cyclical outlook on her new album, New Amerykah Part Two: Return Of The Ankh, and it involves a visit to a Santeria priest in Cuba in 1999. Dressed for the occasion, Badu wore an all-white dress and, despite the humid weather, her signature towering head wrap. As she sat on the dusty sidewalk waiting to enter the house of Ifa, a young man who could best be described as curious looking barreled down next to her, popped open a can of beer, lit a cigarette, and began making small talk to another guy who Badu assumed was also waiting for a reading. Soon after, the house door opened and a charming old lady welcomed her; the young man, dressed in white cut-off denim shorts and a faded American sportswear jersey, followed them into the house. Uncertain of his reason for being there, Badu became reserved and uncomfortable with the idea of someone else sitting in on her reading. And then it dawned on her: This young man was the priest. He came from a long line of respected priests. He didn’t have to wear fancy garments, or signal his faith with outward expressions. He just was. From that moment on, Badu’s head wrap came off — both figuratively and literally.
When Badu says “return of the ankh,” she doesn’t mean she’s returning to wearing the head wrap or any other accessory that evokes 1997’s Baduizm epoch. She means much more. The return of the ankh is the return of a feeling, what makes her creative, what makes her passionate, what makes her Badu. |

| Raheem Devaughn | Love & War Masterpeace
The Great Recession. The War on Terror. Global warming. The Earth-shattering quake in Haiti. Between man-made messes and natural disasters, it seems like we’re all catching hell these days. Rather than shy away from the financial, physical and emotional challenges so many of us face, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Raheem DeVaughn tackles them head on with The Love & War MasterPeace, his most ambitious album to date.
“The Love & War MasterPeace is one half social commentary, one half love,” explains the soul singer. “With everything going on, it just feels like the right time for it. As a country I think we’ve made some progress, but we remain divided —it’s still poverty versus wealth and good versus evil. We’re separated by skin color and religion, politics and control over natural resources. I think of this album as a natural extension of where I am personally and where we are as a nation.”

Shyheim
The streets were flooded with urban philosophers, covered with black ski masks, heavy wool scarves and fatigue down jackets, packed with feathers that kept them warm. Their eyes moved slowly around the street corners, while the sounds of Shyheim’s 1993 rugged hip-hop track “On and On,” inspired the Staten Island locals to be creative- until they couldn’t think anymore.
Their hands froze, their phones chirped, their eyes glistened in the New York silhouette, while their heads bobbed, back and forth as a symbol of empathy. Faces with smiles, smirks and sounds of laughter overshadowed the reality of struggle, as the music lovers’ reminisced of the “Rugged Child” and his sharp, poised approach to hip-hip.

Keke Wyatt | WHO kNEW?
A protégée of Chicago-based producer/songwriter Steve "Stone" Huff, Ketara "KeKe" Wyatt is an R&B singer who has been influenced by urban contemporary and hip-hop, as well as classic soul. Wyatt's sleek yet gritty work brings to mind Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott, and other hip-hop-influenced urban singers who emerged in the '90s. However, her debut album, Soul Sista, indicates she is also well aware of the contributions of Baby Boomer favorites like Chaka Khan, Deniece Williams, and Patti LaBelle -- one of the tracks on Soul Sista is a cover of LaBelle's hit ballad "If Only You Knew." Wyatt now lives in Kentucky but was born in Indianapolis, IN, where she grew up listening to a variety of R&B and gospel and came from a very musical family. Both of her parents sang in church; her mother was a vocalist, her father an organist. Wyatt's parents had her singing in church as a child but did not discourage her from pursuing a career in secular music; in fact, they exposed her to a lot of secular R&B at home. When Wyatt was in her early teens, she sang in various female groups -- one of which was a very early version of Destiny's Child. It was also during Wyatt's adolescent years that she met her mentor, Huff, who is known for his work with the Isley Brothers, Joe, Avant, and other major R&B artists. Huff produced some demos for Wyatt and went about trying to get her a record deal; in 2000, she signed with MCA. That year, Huff brought Avant and Wyatt together for a remake of Rene & Angela's '80s ballad "My First Love," which was included on Avant's platinum My Thoughts. In 2001, Huff produced Wyatt's Soul Sista and did much of the writing; the only track he didn't write or co-write was Wyatt's cover of "If Only You Knew." Soul Sista was released in November 2001, and "Used to Love was chosen as its first single. Alex Henderson, All Music Guid

Sade | Soldier of Love
Soldier of Love is only the sixth studio album the band Sade have released during their 25 year career, and the first since Lovers Rock in 2000. For Sade herself, as the lynchpin of the group's songwriting effort, it's a simple matter of integrity and authenticity. "I only make records when I feel I have something to say. I'm not interested in releasing music just for the sake of selling something. Sade is not a brand."
The call went out in 2008 for the group to re-convene at Peter Gabriel's Real World studio, near Sade's home in the countryside of south west England. It was the first time the four principals had met up since the Lovers Rock tour wrapped in 2001. Bassist Paul Denman de-camped from Los Angeles, where he had been managing his teenage son's punk band, Orange. Guitarist and sax player Stuart Matthewman interrupted his film soundtrack work in New York, and keyboardist Andrew Hale gave up his A&R consultancy.
In a series of fortnightly sessions at Real World, Sade sketched out the material for a new album which, they all felt, was probably their most ambitious to date. In particular, the sonic layering and martial beats of the title track, Soldier Of Love, sounded quite different from anything they had previously recorded. According to Andrew Hale: "The big question for all of us at the beginning was, did we still want to do this and could we still get along as friends?" The answer soon came back as a passionate affirmative. |
